Anita and Isabella, the owners of The Bircher Bar, are life partners who have shared an incredible journey together over the past 15 years. Driven by a desire to reach new milestones in both their personal and professional lives, Anita envisioned a new opportunity that would allow them to grow together and build a future as business partners, combining each of their strengths and passions.

With Anita’s entrepreneurial spirit and Isabella’s background in health, they took a leap of faith and acquired The Bircher Bar, a health and wellness e-commerce site focused on natural products such as greens powders, medicinal mushrooms, supplements, and much more.

The website sets itself apart by focusing on longevity, anti-aging, and foundational health products to support a thriving, vibrant life. Unlike other supplement stores, Bircher Bar is committed to natural living and provide a carefully curated selection of high-quality essentials, tailored to help you live longer and stronger with confidence. Passionate about topics like longevity and women’s health, Anita and Isabella aim to inspire and connect with others seeking to optimise their health and wellness journey.

How has your experience of being raised by migrant parents from Asia, who overcame adversity to build a successful life in Australia, influenced you both as entrepreneurs?

We both credit our parents as a major source of inspiration in our entrepreneurial journey. Our parents migrated to Australia from Asia and faced immense challenges, from learning a completely new language to starting over in a country where everything was unfamiliar. Despite these hurdles, they’ve stood out for their relentless hard work and fierce commitment to not just survive, but to truly thrive in their new environment.

Growing up, we’ve witnessed our parents repeatedly overcoming obstacles, which taught us valuable lessons in resilience and determination. Our parents demonstrated that no matter how difficult life gets, you keep pushing forward, adapt, and seize every opportunity. This mentality has become a core part of how we approach our own work, fueling our ambition and dedication to our entrepreneurial endeavors.

Our parents’ story also serves as a powerful reminder to us not to take opportunities for granted. The sacrifices our parents made to provide us with a better future inspire us to work hard and honor those efforts. The grit and perseverance they’ve displayed have become the foundation upon which we build everything we do as entrepreneurs.

Anita, you’ve switched careers from being in digital media to a lawyer to a buyer’s agent and now an entrepreneur. Fear of change is one of the main reasons why people remain stuck in a corporate job. What advice would you give to women of colour who are looking to make a change professionally but are held back by fear?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the fear of staying stagnant is far greater than the fear of change. My greatest fear has always been not trying feeling stuck and confined to a 9-to-5 routine. That fear outweighed any comfort a corporate job could offer.

My current role as a commercial buyer’s agent in Sydney is definitely less stressful and offers more flexibility than working as a corporate lawyer, which allows me to focus on building a more balanced and fulfilling life. I love helping clients achieve passive income and financial freedom, but I also believe in actively working on my own dreams. That’s why I continue to build The Bircher Bar in the background — to create something meaningful and lasting to me personally.

While I’ve genuinely enjoyed each of my careers — from digital media to law to becoming a buyer’s agent — what I value most is having the freedom to choose how I spend my time. Being stuck in a 9-to-5 corporate job didn’t spark joy for me — it felt limiting. That’s why I’m putting in the hard work now, taking steps to take charge of my life and create a path that aligns with my values and goals. I believe we only get one life, and I don’t want to waste a single second doing something that doesn’t bring me passion and purpose.

My advice to women of colour who want to break out of the 9-to-5 and start their own business is to ask yourself the same question Marie Kondo asks: “What sparks joy?” For me, while I enjoy my work as a buyer’s agent, I’m also ambitious and curious about personal finance and building a future of financial freedom with my partner.

For anyone looking to make a change, especially women of colour, my advice is this: embrace the discomfort, put in the effort, and focus on smart financial habits. It doesn’t have to be an “all or nothing approach”. Earning more, investing wisely, and maintaining good personal finance practices can open doors and free up the mind to opportunities that align with your true goals.

For me, I worked hard to build up savings through investments and getting paid well in my corporate job before breaking free with my true passions — working as a commercial buyer’s agent as well as starting an ecommerce business with my partner.

Fear is natural, but for me, the fear of staying stuck was far greater than the fear of stepping into the unknown.

Building a business together as a couple requires a different set of dynamics to being a romantic couple. What are some things that you’ve implemented together to draw boundaries between your business and personal lives?

We survived the pandemic together in a small one-bedroom apartment in the city while both working demanding senior corporate jobs — if we could get through that, we figure we can handle just about anything!

But building a business together as a couple has definitely introduced a different dynamic. Maintaining boundaries between work and personal life isn’t always easy, but we’ve found a few strategies that help

For one, Isabella enjoys switching up her working environment, which helps create a sense of separation. During the day, Anita works as a commercial buyer’s agent while Isa focuses on running the business. In the evenings, we come together to debrief as business partners.

To keep things balanced, we try to alternate where one weekend we catch up on the day to day business goals/wins with the next week focused on personal time — spending time with friends and just having fun together.

We’ve been pretty lucky because we both have similar temperaments and understand that this is a short-term push to make the business work. We make an effort to manage stress by scheduling fun activities like morning swims and playing with our French bulldog. It helps keep us grounded and connected as a couple outside of the business.

You are both deeply connected to your families and cultural roots. How can we do better to encourage children of migrant parents to appreciate and preserve traditions in their cultures?

Both of us are deeply connected to our parents and cultural roots, and food plays a huge role in that connection. Celebrating special occasions like Lunar New Year and holding deep values of love and respect for our elders are ingrained in us — they’re part of who we are. Gathering together over meals is really our love language.

As proud aunts, it’s important for us to pass these traditions down to the next generation too — our niece and nephew. Spending time with them alongside our parents helps keep these cultural practices alive. Catching up over meals and involving them in celebrations (Lunar new year, red pockets etc)  gives them a sense of connection and building “feel good” memories.

It’s about making these traditions meaningful and fun, so they understand the value behind them and feel inspired to carry them forward.

What have been some of the most memorable moments of your entrepreneurial journey thus far?

One of the most memorable moments has been the elation of learning how to code and improving as digital marketers — seeing our ideas come to life has been incredibly rewarding. Another highlight is the work we’re doing behind the scenes to create a new platform for The Bircher Bar.

We’re transitioning from a pure blog site to a premium health products e-commerce platform, focusing on anti-aging and longevity products as well as everyday health and well-being products that every health conscious Australian should have in their pantry. We’re excited for your viewers to see the fruits of our labor as we enter this next phase — to be launched soon in Winter 2025.
