Empowering Young Girls To Live Up To Their Infinite Potential

Morgan Linson is a Registered Nurse, College Professor, Licensed Real Estate Agent, and Founder/CEO of a non-profit organization called Mor Girls with Goals. In addition to her profession and organization, she is the owner of Mor Life, which is a travel accessory company. To date, she is a new author, releasing her first book, The Ultimate Experience in October 2023.

Being a nurse is not just her profession, it has been her life’s dream. Nursing opened doors for her second passion, traveling the world. It has afforded her much flexibility and financial freedom. But more than anything, it provides profound satisfaction to make a difference in the lives of the patients and to serve the very community she was raised in.

Morgan’s journey in nursing began at the age of 16. She dedicated herself to an extracurricular program at George Washington Preparatory High school for students who wanted to become Certified Nursing Attendants. At 17 years old, Morgan finished the program and started working at a convalescent home after graduating high school.

Once in the role of a Certified Nursing Attendant, Morgan quickly realized she wanted to help patients even more, which motivated and drove her to pursue becoming a Registered Nurse.

Witnessing all of the appalling healthcare disparities that existed for minorities, such as higher rates of illness, injury, disability, mortality, access to treatment, and quality of care, to name a few. These disparities inspired Morgan to make a positive impact on her community. She would accomplish this by seeking higher education to adequately advocate and inform patients about their disease and how to manage it beyond the hospital setting to obtain optimal health.

To date, Morgan has worked tirelessly for 16 years for the County of Los Angeles, serving and treating patients regardless of their inability to pay. She’s found great reward and gratification in her endeavors. Thousands of patients and four college degrees later, Morgan Linson—a healthcare provider, is proud of her chosen path. She is currently in school to receive her 5th degree, a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Education.

Her love and dedication to nursing was so tremendous that she took it a step further and began teaching nursing at a local community college. Known as ‘Professor Linson’, never in a million years did she think she would be teaching nursing! To her surprise, it has been gratifying knowing that she is providing a solid foundation for all her students and ultimately contributing to making a difference in the future of healthcare.

In addition to nursing, Morgan earned her real estate license to become a skilled investor and spread awareness about the importance of ownership, especially within the black community. Becoming a homeowner at an early age was one of her most outstanding achievements and the best financial decisions she’s made. Homeownership to Morgan means liberation and freedom. Eventually, she’ll explore the real estate market as an agent (of course, whenever she can find the time.)

As a young girl, who witnessed much dysfunction and despair, she wanted to create a safe space for girls and young women to pursue their goals and dreams.

Mor Girls with Goals is a non-profit organization founded by Morgan. Its dedicated mission is to teach girls and young women how to love themselves, understand who they are, learn who they are becoming, decide what they want out of life, and go after it early to get a head start.

In-depth, Mor Girls with Goals is rooted in the belief that all girls have infinite potential and that their socio-economic status should not stifle it. Morgan’s focus for her organization is to continue to promote education, provide financial literacy, career readiness, exposure to international travel, expand horizons, create life experiences that will leave a lasting positive impression, and promote mental & physical health. In her experience, it is easier to prevent than it is to cure, and it is more effective to build strong girls than it is to repair broken women. Youth mentorship is a necessary component of Morgan’s organization.

Mor Life is in an arena of entrepreneurship that is new to her. Morgan always says she is more of a working woman than a boss. However, she wanted to challenge herself to do something different: business.

Amidst everything she encounters daily—nursing, teaching, being a CEO and business owner, traveling has been Morgan’s source of sanity and relaxation. It is the reward that she provides herself for working hard and always doing her best.

Having visited over 70 countries and five continents, her perspective on life and respect for other cultures, religions, and ethnicities has broadened significantly. Her love for travel influenced and guided her to write “The Ultimate Experience”.  Morgan’s mission is to be inspired and inspire others to change the narrative of how our stories are written.

Why do you think it’s so important for us to enable and empower girls whilst they’re still in their youth?

When girls are empowered from a young age, they grow up believing in their capabilities and have the confidence to pursue their dreams.

Empowering girls during their youth helps build their self-esteem and resilience. It allows them to develop a strong sense of self-worth and believe in their abilities. This confidence helps them navigate through challenges, setbacks, and societal pressures, fostering their personal growth.

Mor Girls with Goals encourages our girls to explore diverse interests, pursue unconventional careers, and engage in activities traditionally dominated by men. This promotes inclusivity, diversity, and a more balanced society where everyone’s talents can flourish.

By providing them with education, mentorship, and opportunities to develop their skills, we are preparing them to become confident, compassionate, and capable leaders. These empowered girls will grow up to make a positive impact on their communities, society, and the world.

What were some memorable moments of your work at Mor Girls with Goals that you can share with us?

Every activity, workshop and event with the girls has been memorable and meaningful. However, the most memorable moments would be our time in Kenya.

Our trip to Africa was a mind blowing experience for the young ladies and even the chaperones who attended. It provided a new concept of life and meaning for them. From the moments to the majestic safari rides to the unforgettable visit at the orphanage with the incredible children who sang and danced with us.

MGWG is more than just an organization, it is a safe space for girls and young women to blossom into their best selves. The international trip not only exposed them to their first trip out of the country, but revealed global issues that need resolution and resources.

Seeing the girls volunteer and get involved was very memorable. They left the trip empowered, inspired and wanting to remain involved in the work that we will continue to do for the orphanage in the future.

What and how can we do more to empower girls and young women of today?

There are numerous ways we can empower young girls and women today. Above all, I believe that education is the most important.

Ensuring girls have access to quality education is vital.

Promote programs that encourage girls to pursue STEM subjects and other fields traditionally dominated by men.

Support scholarships and mentorship programs to help girls excel academically.

Foster an environment where girls feel confident expressing themselves and taking on challenges.

Encourage them to participate in activities that build their self-esteem, such as sports, public speaking, or creative pursuits.

Mentorship programs can offer support, advice, and guidance on academic, personal, and career development, which is a major component for MGWG.

Lastly I would say, be supportive!  Support organizations and initiatives that advocate for young girls and women because it’s not supported enough.

Why do you think so many young women are still consciously opting out of careers in male-dominated industries such as tech?

The absence of relatable role models and mentors may discourage young women from pursuing these fields. The underrepresentation of women in male-dominated industries can make it difficult for young women to envision themselves succeeding in such careers.

Societal expectations and stereotypes can create an environment where women feel unwelcome or face discrimination in industries. These biases can affect hiring practices, workplace culture, and advancement opportunities, leading women to opt out due to a lack of support and equal treatment.

Women often face barriers in accessing quality education and training in STEM fields. Stereotypes that suggest women are not as capable in technical subjects can deter them from pursuing careers in these industries. Cultural norms and expectations may also discourage women from pursuing careers that are seen as unconventional.

Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including promoting diversity and inclusion, challenging stereotypes, providing mentorship and support systems, and creating inclusive workplace cultures.

What are some tips that you can share with parents of young girls to help them raise strong, independent and confident young women?

I have yet to become a parent, but working with girls and young women I have developed a sense of what they need to thrive.

By direct observation and basic verbal communication, I have learned from the girls that speaking positively, using words of affirmation, encouragement, and promoting self-esteem is a major factor in building confidence in young women.

Parenting is such an honorable job and should be taken seriously to ensure that these girls grow into amazing women.

Tips that I can provide based on what I wish I would’ve received are as follows.

  • Exposure to different hobbies, sports, and subjects to help her discover her passions and develop a well-rounded skill set.
  • Praising her efforts, emphasizing her strengths, and encouraging a positive body image.
  • Teaching girls and young women to embrace her uniqueness and value herself beyond societal beauty standards, especially in the era of social media.
  • Life is going to be full of ups and downs, so it is important for parents to teach their daughters to embrace failures and setbacks as learning opportunities.
  • Encourage her to persevere through challenges, develop problem-solving skills, and cultivate a growth mindset.
  • Help her understand that setbacks are a natural part of life and can lead to successful outcomes.
